Understanding CBT, DBT & ERP
Evidence-Based Therapies for Growth

We believe in providing therapies that are not only compassionate but also effective. Two of the most well-researched and widely-used therapeutic approaches we offer are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). While both are rooted in evidence-based practices, they address different needs and challenges. Below, we’ll help you understand what these therapies are and how they can help you achieve your mental health goals.

What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a structured, goal-oriented form of talk therapy that focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. It operates on the principle that our thoughts, feelings, and actions are interconnected, and by addressing negative or distorted thinking, we can influence our emotional and behavioral responses.

How CBT Works:

  • Identifying Negative Thought Patterns: Together with your therapist, you’ll uncover thoughts that contribute to distress or unhelpful behaviors. For example, you might have thoughts like, “I’m not good enough” or “things will never get better.”

  • Challenging and Reframing Thoughts: Once identified, these thoughts are examined for accuracy and replaced with healthier, more balanced perspectives.

  • Learning Coping Skills: You’ll develop practical strategies to manage stress, solve problems, and regulate emotions.

Who Can Benefit from CBT?

CBT is highly versatile and can be used to treat a range of mental health concerns, including:

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Depression

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Panic Disorder

  • Phobias

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Eating disorders

CBT is often short-term, with sessions designed to focus on specific goals and skill-building to empower you to take charge of your mental health.

What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?

DBT was originally developed to treat individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) but has since been adapted to address mood regulation and a variety of mental health challenges. DBT combines elements of CBT with mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies. It’s particularly helpful for individuals who experience intense emotions or difficulty in relationships.

How DBT Works:

DBT is structured around four key skill areas:

  • Mindfulness: Learning to stay present and fully engage in the moment, reducing impulsivity and emotional overwhelm.

  • Distress Tolerance: Building tools to cope with crisis situations without resorting to harmful behaviors.

  • Emotional Regulation: Developing strategies to identify, understand, and manage intense emotions.

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Enhancing communication skills to navigate relationships with greater confidence and clarity.

DBT can be delivered through individual therapy sessions, group skills training, or a combination of both. The approach emphasizes validation and acceptance while also encouraging positive change.

Who Can Benefit from DBT?

DBT is particularly effective for individuals who struggle with:

  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

  • Chronic self-harm or suicidal behaviors

  • Severe emotional dysregulation

  • Eating disorders

  • Substance use disorders

What Is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) specifically designed to treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and anxiety-related conditions. ERP helps individuals confront their fears in a controlled and gradual way, reducing the power of compulsive behaviors and irrational thoughts over time. It operates on the principle that by facing distressing situations without engaging in compulsions or avoidance, the anxiety associated with those situations diminishes. ERP is often highly effective in reducing symptoms, especially for those struggling with OCD.

How ERP Works:

  • Gradual Exposure: With the support of your therapist, you’ll begin by facing situations that trigger your anxiety or compulsive urges, starting with less challenging scenarios and gradually working up to more difficult ones.

  • Response Prevention: During exposure, you’ll be encouraged to resist performing the compulsive behavior or mental ritual that typically follows the distressing thought or event. Over time, this helps break the cycle of anxiety and compulsion.

  • Building Tolerance: ERP helps you build tolerance to discomfort and uncertainty, teaching you that anxiety tends to decrease naturally, even without the need for compulsive responses.

Who Can Benefit from ERP?

ERP is most effective for individuals with:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Panic Disorder

  • Specific Phobias

  • Social Anxiety Disorder

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Choosing the Right Approach for You

CBT, DBT, and ERP are all effective therapies, but the right choice depends on your unique challenges and goals. While CBT focuses on changing thought patterns to improve emotional well-being, DBT provides tools to navigate intense emotions and build healthier relationships, and ERP targets the specific patterns of anxiety and compulsive behaviors often seen in OCD and related conditions. We will work with you to determine the best therapeutic approach for your needs.
