You don’t need to have everything figured out to take the first step. Here’s how reaching out actually works.
How do I get started with Magenta Therapy?
It starts with a free 15-minute phone consultation. You can request one using the Book a Free Consultation button anywhere on this page, which opens our secure scheduling widget. We’ll talk briefly about what you’re looking for and whether we’re a good fit, no cost, no obligation. Prefer to write first? You can also contact us directly.
What happens after I request a consultation?
Once you submit a request, someone from Magenta reaches out to set up your free phone consultation. The call is a relaxed conversation, not a full therapy session or intake, though it does help us understand what’s bringing you in, check that we’re a good fit, and make sure online therapy is the right kind of support for you. If it feels right, we help match you with a therapist and walk you through next steps, including how payment works.
Do I need to know exactly what I want help with before reaching out?
Not at all. Many people reach out knowing only that something feels off, or that they’d like support and aren’t sure where to begin. Part of early therapy is naming what you’re working through together. You’re welcome to bring a clear goal or simply a sense that you’d like to talk to someone. Both are completely normal starting points.
Is the consultation really free, and is there pressure to commit?
Yes, it’s genuinely free, and there’s no pressure to continue. The consultation exists so you can decide whether Magenta feels like the right fit before anything is scheduled or paid for. If it’s not the right match, we’ll gladly point you toward other options where we can.
What if I’ve never been to therapy before?
You’re in good company. Many of our clients are starting therapy for the first time. There’s nothing you need to prepare or read up on beforehand. Your therapist will guide the process, explain anything that’s unfamiliar, and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
How soon can I start?
After your consultation, we work to match you with a therapist and get your first session scheduled as soon as it suits you both. Availability varies by therapist, so the consultation is the best place to ask about timing. We’ll be straight with you about what’s realistic rather than leave you guessing.
What if Magenta isn’t the right fit or level of care for me?
Sometimes what someone needs is different from what we offer, a particular specialty, or more support than weekly online therapy can provide. If that’s the case, we’ll tell you honestly and help point you toward resources that fit. Our goal is for you to get the right care, whether or not that ends up being with us.

Finding the right therapist
Fit matters more than almost anything else in therapy. Here’s how we help you find it.
How are clients matched with a therapist?
During your consultation, we listen for what you’re hoping to work on, what’s mattered in past support if you’ve had it, and any preferences you have. From there we suggest the therapist on our team whose focus and style best fit your goals. You can also read about each clinician yourself on our team page.
Can I choose my own therapist?
Yes. Some people prefer a recommendation; others like to choose for themselves. Every clinician has a profile on our team page describing their focus areas and approach, so you can request someone specific if a particular therapist stands out to you.
What if my therapist isn’t the right fit?
It happens, and it’s okay. A good fit is part of what makes therapy work, so if your therapist doesn’t feel right, just let us know. You can switch to someone else on our team without any awkwardness. We’d always rather help you find the right match than have you stay somewhere that isn’t working.
What should I look for in a good fit?
Mostly, whether you feel comfortable being honest with this person. It’s normal for the first session or two to feel a little new, but over time you should feel listened to, respected, and able to speak openly. Trust your sense of it, and tell us if something feels off, so we can help.
Virtual therapy
Magenta is an online-first practice based in New York. Here’s what online sessions are like and who we can see.
Is online therapy as effective as in person?
For many people and many concerns, video therapy can be just as effective as meeting in person, though fit, privacy, safety, and the type of concern all play a role. What tends to matter most is the relationship with your therapist and the consistency of the work, both of which translate well to a screen. Many clients also find video sessions easier to keep, since there’s no commute and they can meet from a space where they already feel at ease.
Do you have a physical office, or is everything online?
Magenta is an online-first practice. We’re based in New York, including a local office in Lynbrook, but sessions are currently held by secure video rather than in person, so you can meet with your therapist from home or anywhere private and comfortable in the state. There’s nothing to travel to for your appointments.
Who can be seen, and where do you serve clients?
We provide virtual therapy to adults located in New York. That’s our primary focus. Because therapists are licensed by state, you’ll generally need to be physically in New York at the time of your sessions. Connecticut availability is limited to select clinicians. If you’re unsure whether we can work together, just ask during your free consultation.
Can I attend sessions while traveling or outside New York?
Because your therapist is licensed in New York, you generally need to be physically located in the state during your sessions, so traveling within New York is fine. If you’ll be outside New York, let your therapist know ahead of time, since licensing rules can affect whether a session is able to go ahead. When in doubt, just ask.
What do I need for a virtual session?
Not much: a private space where you won’t be overheard, a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera, and a reliable internet connection. Many people take sessions at home; others find a parked car or a quiet room works well. We’ll send you a simple link to join when it’s time.
Is virtual therapy private and secure?
Yes. Sessions are held over a HIPAA-compliant video platform, and the same confidentiality protections that apply to in-person therapy apply to virtual sessions. You can read more in the confidentiality and safety section below.
The therapy process
If you’ve never done this before, here’s an honest picture of what therapy tends to look like.
What is therapy actually like?
Therapy is a regular, private conversation with someone trained to help: a space to think out loud, make sense of what’s hard, and build practical ways forward. Early on, it’s mostly about your therapist getting to know you and what you want to change. Over time, sessions tend to blend talking things through with concrete tools you can use between meetings. It should feel collaborative, not like being lectured or diagnosed at.
What happens in the first appointment?
The first session is mostly about getting oriented. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, what you’re hoping for, and some background that helps them understand your situation. You’re always in control of how much you share, and it’s fine to take it slowly. By the end, you’ll usually have a sense of how you might work together and what a next step looks like.
How are goals set, and how do we know it’s working?
You and your therapist set goals together, based on what you want to be different. Those might be specific (fewer panic attacks, less conflict at home) or broader, like feeling more like yourself. Progress isn’t always a straight line, so you’ll revisit your goals periodically to see what’s shifting and adjust the focus as needed.
How long will I be in therapy?
It depends on what you’re working on and what you want from it. Some people come for a focused stretch around a specific challenge; others value longer-term support. There’s no set length, and you’re never locked in. You and your therapist will talk openly about pacing and what makes sense for you.
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. You don’t need a diagnosis, a referral, or a clear label for what you’re going through to begin. Plenty of people start therapy simply because something feels hard or stuck. If a diagnosis is ever relevant to your care or your insurance, your therapist will talk it through with you rather than spring it on you.
How often will I have sessions?
Many people meet weekly, especially at the start, since regular sessions help build momentum. From there, you and your therapist decide together what rhythm fits your goals and your life. It’s a conversation, not a fixed schedule, and it can change as your needs do.
What if I feel nervous or don’t know what to say?
That’s incredibly common, and there’s genuinely no wrong way to start, you don’t need a script or a tidy explanation. Your therapist will help guide the conversation, and you can share at whatever pace feels right. Therapy is meant to be a judgment-free space, and feeling nervous at first doesn’t mean it won’t work for you.
What kinds of concerns does Magenta help with?
Our therapists work with a wide range of concerns, from anxiety, depression, and OCD to relationship struggles, life transitions, and more. You can see the full picture on our what we treat page. If you’re not sure whether your concern is something we handle, the consultation is a good place to ask.
Services & specialties
A quick map of what we offer and where to read more on a specific concern.
What types of therapy do you offer?
We offer individual therapy for adults and couples and relationship therapy. Across both, our clinicians draw on evidence-based approaches and tailor the work to your goals rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method.
Do you offer couples or relationship therapy?
Yes. Our relationship and dating therapy supports couples and individuals working on communication, conflict, connection, dating patterns, and related concerns. The same self-pay rates that apply to individual therapy apply to couples work.
Can I use insurance for couples therapy?
Sometimes, but it varies. Coverage for couples therapy is often more limited than for individual therapy, and not every plan includes it. The clearest way to know is to let us verify your benefits before you start. Either way, our self-pay rate for couples therapy is the same $100–150 range as individual therapy.
Do you treat OCD?
Yes. We provide specialized therapy for OCD, including evidence-based approaches developed specifically for obsessive-compulsive concerns. If OCD is what’s bringing you in, that page goes into how we approach it.
Can you help with anxiety?
Yes, anxiety is one of the most common reasons people reach out to us. Our therapy for anxiety covers everyday worry, panic, social anxiety, and the physical toll anxiety can take, with practical tools alongside deeper work.
What about depression, BPD, or other concerns?
Our team works with depression, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, relationship concerns, and a range of other challenges. The what we treat page lists the areas we focus on, each with its own deeper page. If you don’t see your exact concern, reach out, we can tell you whether we’re a fit.
Insurance & payment
Clear, honest answers on coverage and cost. For the full guide, see our insurance page.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, Magenta is in-network with many major plans, including UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Aetna, Cigna, Oxford, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Oscar, and more. Coverage varies by plan, so we verify your specific benefits before your first session. Our insurance page explains how this works in detail.
How do I know what my plan covers?
The clearest way is to let us verify your benefits. Before you start, we check your coverage with your insurer and walk you through your expected costs (copay, coinsurance, and any deductible) in plain language, so you have the clearest estimate possible before starting. You’re also welcome to call the member services number on your card and ask directly.
What are your self-pay rates?
Self-pay rates are $100–150 per session for both individual and couples therapy, and the same range applies to your first session. Rates vary by therapist. You’ll find the full breakdown on our pricing page.
Do you offer lower-cost options?
Yes. If you need a lower rate, Magenta offers sliding-scale sessions with our clinical fellows, typically $30–$50 per session. Fellows are master’s-level clinicians in our fellowship program, in partnership with NYU and Columbia University, who see clients under the supervision of our licensed clinicians. Each fellow has a profile on our team page.
What if you’re not in-network with my plan?
You may still be able to work with us using out-of-network benefits. Many plans reimburse part of the cost of out-of-network therapy. We provide superbills (itemized receipts) for out-of-network clients, and we partner with Thrizer to make submitting them and tracking reimbursement simple. The amount reimbursed depends on your plan.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Often, yes. Many clients put Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds toward therapy. If your account comes with a debit or credit card, we can usually charge it directly, and we’ll provide a superbill if your administrator needs documentation. Rules vary by account, so it’s worth confirming eligible expenses with your plan administrator.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is an itemized receipt of your sessions that you submit to your insurer to request reimbursement for out-of-network care. We provide superbills for out-of-network clients, so you have exactly what your plan needs. Our insurance page covers this in more depth.
Confidentiality & safety
What you share in therapy is protected. Here’s how privacy works, and what to do in an emergency.
Is what I share in therapy confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy. What you discuss with your therapist is private and protected by law, and we use a HIPAA-compliant platform for virtual sessions. Your therapist will explain how your information is kept confidential at the start of your work together.
Are there any limits to confidentiality?
There are a small number of legal and ethical exceptions that exist to keep people safe: a serious or imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, or situations where disclosure is required by law, such as a court order. Outside of those, what you share stays private. Your therapist will go over these limits clearly at the start, so you always know where things stand.
What if I’m in crisis or having an emergency?
Magenta Therapy is not a crisis or emergency service. If you’re in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself or someone else, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. Therapy is a meaningful source of ongoing support, but in an emergency, these resources can help right away.
