The questions that keep people from starting
These are the questions almost everyone has before their first session, and they’re fair ones. The honest answer to the last one is yes. Checking your coverage, explaining your expected cost, and helping you avoid surprises is part of what we do before you ever book a session. Get to know Magenta Therapy if you’d like to see who you’d be working with.
Most clients take one of three paths
You don’t need to know which one is yours yet. We’ll help you find it. Here’s the lay of the land.
Using insurance
We’re in-network with many major plans. We verify your benefits first, so you know your share before you begin.
A copay or coinsurance plus any unmet deductible, not the full rate.Out-of-network
Not in-network with your plan? Many plans still reimburse part of the cost. We provide the superbills you’ll need.
You pay, then get part back. The amount depends on your plan.Self-pay
Prefer to skip insurance entirely? Flat, predictable rates, with discounted options if you need a lower rate.

| Path | What you typically pay | Often a good fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| In-network | A copay or coinsurance, plus any unmet deductible | Magenta is in-network with your plan and you want lower, predictable costs. |
| Out-of-network | You pay the rate, then may be reimbursed part of it | Your plan includes out-of-network benefits you’d like to use. |
| Self-pay | $100–150 per session (individual or couples) | You prefer simplicity and flexibility, or your plan doesn’t cover therapy. |
| Clinical fellow | $30–$50 per session, sliding-scale | You need a lower rate and are open to a master’s-level fellow. |
Your actual cost depends on your specific plan, which is exactly what we verify before you start, so you get the clearest estimate available before your first session. Want the simple rate-card view? See our pricing page.

What we check for you
Insurance can be hard to interpret, and you shouldn’t have to decode it alone. Before your first session, we look into the details that shape what you’ll pay, and translate them into plain numbers.
- Whether we’re in-network with your specific plan
- Your copay or coinsurance per session
- How much of your deductible is left this year
- Whether a referral or pre-authorization is required
- Your expected cost per session, based on your verified benefits
How getting started actually works
You don’t need your insurance figured out before you reach out. The first step is just a conversation. We handle the rest with you.

The terms, in plain English
A quick glossary for the words that come up most when paying for therapy.
- Deductible
- What you pay out of pocket each year before your plan starts contributing. Some plans apply one to therapy; some don’t.
- Copay
- A fixed amount per session, say $30, with your plan covering the rest.
- Coinsurance
- A percentage of each session’s cost that you pay, with your plan covering the rest. Depending on your plan, it may apply before or after your deductible.
- In-network
- A provider with an agreement with your insurer, usually lower, more predictable costs for you.
- Out-of-network
- A provider without that contract. You may still be reimbursed if your plan has out-of-network benefits.
- Behavioral health benefits
- The part of your plan that covers mental health and therapy, sometimes with its own rules.
- Superbill
- An itemized receipt of your sessions that you submit to your insurer to request reimbursement.
- Explanation of Benefits
- A statement from your insurer, not a bill, showing what was covered and what you may owe.
- Good Faith Estimate
- A written cost estimate you’re entitled to before starting care if you’re not using insurance.
You may get a good portion back
If we’re not in-network with your plan, many plans still reimburse part of what you pay for out-of-network therapy. To request it, you submit a superbill, an itemized receipt, to your insurer. We provide superbills for out-of-network clients, so you have exactly what your plan needs.
We make the paperwork easy
We partner with Thrizer, built specifically for out-of-network therapy reimbursement. Instead of mailing forms and waiting, you can have superbills submitted for you and track everything in one place. Reimbursement amounts still depend on your individual plan.
Clear, flat rates, and a lower-cost option
Some people prefer to pay directly, for the flexibility to choose their therapist and shape the work without plan rules. Our self-pay rates apply to individual therapy and couples therapy alike.
Lower rates with our clinical fellows
If you need a lower rate, Magenta offers sliding-scale sessions with our advanced clinical fellows, typically $30–$50 per session. Fellows are master’s-level clinicians in our fellowship program, in partnership with NYU and Columbia University. Each has a profile on our team page, so you can see who you’d be working with.
Pre-tax dollars toward your care
Many clients put Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds toward therapy, whether they’re paying self-pay rates or covering an out-of-network balance.
If your HSA or FSA comes with a debit or credit card, we can charge it directly. That’s the simplest way to use these funds. And if your plan administrator needs documentation, we’ll provide a superbill. Either way, we keep it easy.
Rules vary by account, so it’s worth confirming eligible expenses with your HSA or FSA administrator.
What to ask your insurance company
Prefer to check coverage on your own? Call the member services number on your card and ask these. (Or skip it. This is exactly what we verify for you.)
- Do I have coverage for outpatient mental health therapy by telehealth?
- What’s my copay before meeting my deductible?
- What is my deductible, and how much have I met this year?
- Once it’s met, what’s my copay or coinsurance per session?
- Do I have out-of-network benefits, and what percentage is reimbursed?
- Is a referral or pre-authorization required before I start?
- If out-of-network, how and where do I submit a superbill?
- Is telehealth therapy covered the same as in-person?
Rather not make the call? Get in touch and we’ll handle benefit verification with you.
Insurance & billing questions
Do you take my insurance?
Magenta Therapy is in-network with many major plans, including UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Aetna, Cigna, Oxford, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Oscar. Coverage varies by plan, so we verify your specific benefits before scheduling. If we’re not in-network with yours, you may still be able to use out-of-network benefits or self-pay.
How do I find out what my plan actually covers?
The clearest way is benefit verification. We check your coverage with your insurer before your first session and walk you through your copay, coinsurance, and any deductible. You can also call the member services number on your card using the checklist above.
Will I get a surprise bill?
Verifying your benefits up front is meant to help prevent that. We give you your expected cost before you begin, based on what your plan tells us, and if your plan later reprocesses a claim or your deductible shifts, you’ll always know who to ask.
What if you’re not in-network with my plan?
You may still be able to work with us using out-of-network benefits. Many plans reimburse part of the cost, though the amount varies. We can check your out-of-network benefits beforehand and provide superbills you submit for reimbursement.
What is a superbill, and how does reimbursement work?
A superbill is an itemized receipt of your sessions that your insurer needs to reimburse you for out-of-network care. We provide them for out-of-network clients. To make it simple, we partner with Thrizer, which can submit superbills for you and track your reimbursement in one place. The amount reimbursed depends on your plan.
What are your self-pay rates?
Self-pay is $100–150 per session for individual and couples therapy, including your first session. Rates vary by therapist. If you need a lower rate, we also offer discounted sliding-scale sessions with our clinical fellows.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes, many clients use HSA or FSA funds toward therapy. If your account comes with a debit or credit card, we can charge it directly, and we’ll provide a superbill if your administrator needs documentation. Rules vary by account, so it’s worth confirming eligible expenses with your administrator.
What are clinical fellows, and why are their rates lower?
Our clinical fellows are master’s-level clinicians in our fellowship program, in partnership with NYU and Columbia University. They offer sliding-scale sessions, typically $30–$50 per session, which makes care more accessible. You can read each fellow’s profile on our team page.
Is the consultation really free?
Yes. The first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation, a chance to talk through what you’re looking for and decide together whether we’re the right fit, with no cost and no pressure.
You don’t have to untangle insurance on your own.
Book a free consultation and we’ll verify your benefits, explain your real costs, and help you find the path that fits, before you ever commit to a session.
