EMDR in New York, covered by your insurance
Clinically reviewed by Emilia Shapiro, LCSW
Magenta Therapy is available in-network and out-of-network, and verifies your benefits before your first session. EMDR here is delivered online with adults across New York State.
How insurance applies to EMDR
EMDR is psychotherapy, delivered by a licensed clinician in a standard therapy session. Health plans generally treat it the way they treat other outpatient therapy, and it is billed under the same session codes rather than as a separate procedure.
What varies is your plan. Copays, coinsurance, deductibles and any limits on the number of sessions differ between insurers and between plans from the same insurer. The only reliable answer for your situation comes from checking your specific benefits, which we do before your first session.
If we are not in-network with your plan, self-pay at Magenta is $125 per session, and superbills are available so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement from your insurer if your plan offers it.
EMDR is therapy. Your plan generally covers it the way it covers therapy.
Session rates at Magenta
Magenta Therapy is in-network with many major plans. When your plan covers us, you are typically responsible for a copay or coinsurance plus any deductible you have not yet met, rather than the full session rate.
A flat rate if you would rather not involve a plan, or if we are not in-network with yours. The same rate applies to your first session.
Full detail on plans, verification and out-of-network options is on our insurance and billing page.
We can check your benefits before anything is scheduled.
How the first steps work
You do not need your benefits worked out before you get in touch. Verification is something we handle, and it happens before anything is scheduled.
A free 15-minute consultation
A phone conversation about what you are hoping EMDR will help with and whether we are a good fit. There is no cost and no obligation to book afterwards.
We verify your benefits before session one
You share your plan details and we check your coverage with your insurer. This happens before anything is scheduled.
You see your expected cost per session
We tell you what we found and what we expect each session to cost you, including any deductible you have not yet met. Then you decide.
If we are out-of-network for you
We are not in-network with every plan in New York. If yours is not one of them, these are the options available to you.
- Self-pay is a flat $125 per session, including your first session.
- Many plans reimburse part of the cost of out-of-network therapy, and we provide superbills for clients using that route.
- HSA and FSA funds can usually be applied toward the cost, and we can charge the card directly.
- We can check your out-of-network benefits before you start, so you know what to expect.
Which plans we are in-network with, and how superbills are handled, are set out on our insurance page.
When we check your plan, we look at whether Magenta is in-network for your specific policy, what your copay or coinsurance is for an outpatient therapy session, how much of your deductible remains, and whether your plan places any limit on the number of sessions. You get those answers before your first appointment.
Questions that come up about billing
Insurers require a diagnosis code on claims for therapy, the same as they do for other outpatient care. If you would rather not have one submitted, self-pay is an option and no claim is filed.
Some plans set session limits and others do not. It is one of the things we check when we verify your benefits, so you know at the start rather than partway through.
Tell us when your plan or employer changes and we will re-verify your benefits. If your new plan puts us out-of-network, self-pay is $125 per session and superbills are available.
No. The consultation is free and takes 15 minutes, and checking your benefits costs nothing and carries no obligation to book.

Cost and coverage questions we get asked
Is EMDR covered by insurance in New York?
EMDR is psychotherapy delivered by a licensed clinician, so plans generally treat it the way they treat other outpatient therapy. Coverage varies plan by plan, which is why we verify your specific benefits before your first session. Magenta Therapy is in-network with many major plans.
How much does EMDR therapy cost in New York City?
At Magenta Therapy, self-pay is a flat $125 per session. If we are in-network with your plan, your cost is typically a copay or coinsurance plus any unmet deductible rather than the full session rate. We verify your benefits before your first session so you know the figure in advance.
Which insurance plans is Magenta Therapy in-network with?
Magenta Therapy is in-network with many major plans. Because coverage varies plan by plan even within the same insurer, the reliable answer for you specifically comes from benefit verification rather than a list. We check your coverage before anything is scheduled and tell you what we find. The current details are set out on our insurance and billing page.
What happens if you are not in-network with my plan?
Self-pay is a flat $125 per session. Many plans reimburse part of the cost of out-of-network therapy and we provide superbills for clients using that route. HSA or FSA funds can usually be applied toward the cost. We can check your out-of-network benefits before you start.
Do you check my benefits before my first session?
Yes. Benefit verification happens before anything is scheduled. You share your plan details, we check your coverage with your insurer, and we walk you through your expected cost per session in plain language. The point is that you never discover what you owe after you have already started.
Does an EMDR session cost more than a regular therapy session?
No. At Magenta an EMDR session is a standard therapy session and is billed the same way, so the self-pay rate of $125 and your insurance cost are the same as they would be for any other session with us.
Who would I see for EMDR, and is the consultation really free?
Isabelle Randall, LMSW, provides EMDR at Magenta Therapy, working online with adults across New York State. She has completed an EMDRIA-approved basic training in EMDR. And yes, the first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation with no cost and no obligation, which is also when we can start checking your coverage.
